The legal status of CBD in Hawaii is a bit complex. Even though CBD is still illegal in the state, registered medical marijuana patients are allowed to use CBD for health purposes. As with the rest of the United States, Hawaii has also seen a significant rise in the number of CBD users after the US senate made hemp-derived CBD federally legal in the country in 2018.

After THC, CBD is the most abundant cannabinoid compound present in the cannabis plant. However, CBD does not cause any psychoactive effects like THC, even though both cannabinoids have similar chemical structures. CBD is a completely safe compound when compared to THC.

Numerous studies have undergone over the years to find out about the health benefits of CBD. Today, we know that CBD possesses anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, anti-anxiety, anti-seizure, anti-bacterial, and several other therapeutic properties. Furthermore, CBD is shown to be beneficial in the treatment of health problems like anxiety, epilepsy, arthritis, nausea, skin problems, insomnia, etc.

The Hawaii Department of Health in 2019 clarified where the state stands on CBD matter. The department also stated that it is in their intention to regulate all the hemp-derived CBD products that are approved by the FDA.

In 2019, the health department of Hawaii notified all the local businesses in the states about the legality of CBD in Hawaii. The department also warned the local business about the criminal penalties and regulatory actions that may be given to those who produce or sell CBD products in the state.

However, there is an exception for registered medical marijuana patients. The Hawaii Department of Health allows patients with qualifying health conditions to purchase medical cannabis products that contain THC and CBD. They have to apply for a medical marijuana card for buying these products. Also, these products should only be bought from a state-approved medical marijuana dispensary.

Even though CBD is still illegal in Hawaii, most stores, restaurants, cafes, health food shops, etc. sell CBD products. The health department of Hawaii has the authority to remove CBD from all these shops and to impose fines for the violation of state laws.
