Migraine is a neurological condition that is characterized by intense headaches. Migraine headaches can affect people of all ages and may begin in childhood or early adulthood. Statistics show that women are more likely to be affected by migraines than men.

The common symptoms of migraine include nausea, numbness, vomiting, difficulty speaking, and sensitivity to light and sound.  Nausea and vomiting start about an hour after the start of the headache. If you only have nausea, you can ease it by taking antiemetic drugs. But treatment becomes difficult when nausea and vomiting comes together.

Recent studies are showing that the therapeutic properties that CBD possesses are very beneficial in alleviating many health disorders, including migraine and its symptoms.

CBD For Migraine Relief

There are only limited researches on the effect of CBD on the treatment of migraine. Most of the existing studies look at the combined effect of CBD and THC on migraines. A study conducted by the European Academy of Neurology looked at the combined effect of CBD and THC for migraine relief. The study was conducted in two phases.

During the first phase, a combination of two compounds was given to 48 people with chronic migraines. 19 % THC was present in one compound and the other compound contained 9 % CBD but no THC. The compounds were given orally at a dose of 100 mg. But no effects were observed. The acute headache was reduced by 55 % when the doses were increased to 200 mg.

The second phase of the study looked at people suffering from cluster headaches. A daily dose of 200 mg of a combination of THC and CBD were given to 48 people with cluster headaches for three months. After the treatment period, it was observed that the combination of THC and CBD reduced the migraine attacks by 40.4 %.

Final Thoughts

There is no conclusive evidence that suggests CBD as an effective treatment for migraines. Most of the studies looked at a combination of THC and CBD. But there are many anecdotal records by CBD users that are really encouraging. If you are trying CBD products for migraine relief, consult a doctor first to determine the safe dosage for consumption.
